The Medicare Safety Net
If you have several medical or mental health appointments during the year, the Medicare Safety Net may help reduce your out-of-pocket costs.
The Medicare Safety Net keeps track of eligible out-of-hospital medical expenses across each calendar year. Once you reach the relevant threshold, Medicare may provide a higher rebate for certain eligible services for the remainder of that calendar year.
Reaching the Safety Net does not change the fee charged by your clinician. It changes the amount that Medicare may reimburse you. The additional benefit you receive will depend on the service, the relevant Medicare item number, your individual circumstances and any applicable Medicare Safety Net benefit cap.
